The Houthis have carried out a new major attack against some commercial ships in the Red Sea

On Tuesday, Shiite and Yemeni Houthi rebels carried out another attack with drones and missiles against ships transiting the Red Sea, one of the most extensive and massive among those carried out so far: the attack was carried out off the coast of the Yemeni port cities of Hodeida and Mokha, at a point where several commercial ships were transiting at the time. Both the US and British navies intervened, shooting down eighteen drones, two cruise missiles and a ballistic missile in total, according to declared by the US Department of Defense: despite the extent of the attack, no damage of any kind has been reported at the moment.

The Houthis, who support Hamas, began carrying out attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea after the war in the Gaza Strip began, in retaliation against Israel. They have made that stretch of sea less and less safe and created a crisis that is disrupting global maritime transport, with significant consequences that risk becoming even worse in the coming weeks: the Red Sea route is used by around 12 percent of global goods and is used by the vast majority of goods moved between Europe and Asia and between Asia and the east coast of America. Due to the Houthi attacks, in recent days some commercial companies had suspended travel in the Red Sea, following much longer and more expensive routes.
