The UN adopts the first resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza: applause after approval with 14 votes in favor and one abstention

After months of stalemate the Advise Of Safety dell’Her passed a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

The resolution obtained 14 votes in favour, no votes against and the United States abstention. The document “calls for an immediate ceasefire for Ramadan respected by all parties leading to a lasting and sustainable ceasefire and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, as well as the guarantee of humanitarian access to deal with the their medical and humanitarian needs”.

At the end of the vote by show of hands, the adoption of the resolution was welcomed with a long vote applause.

Shortly before the vote, Russia had proposed an amendment to replace the term “durable” with permanent.” The term, in fact, according to the Russian ambassador Vassily Nebenzia it had been replaced at the last minute and would have “watered down the text and left plenty to interpretations, allowing Israel to resume military operations at any time”.

The request was rejected but Moscow still voted in favor of the resolution.
