Over 500 women have sued Uber claiming they were attacked by drivers from the car reservation service. In the class action, which was filed in the San Francisco courthouse, the ride-hailing giant is accused of failing to address the problem, despite being aware of its scope since 2014.

Inaction has led to an increase in cases of assaults, from harassment to kidnapping and rape, of female passengers, denounced the law firm Slater Slater Schulman, which represents the 550 women participating in the class action. Lawyers said they are investigating at least 150 other possible cases of assaults. Uber did not comment, but confirmed that the class action was initiated last February. The company recently released the results of its own internal investigation into the problem, showing that there were 3,824 reports of assaults, this time by its drivers, in 2019 and 2020 alone.

It is not the first time that Uber has faced lawsuits of this type: in 2018 it reached an out-of-court settlement with the two women who had filed the appeal. The company has assured that it is seriously addressing the problem and that it has already taken steps to tackle it. But class-action lawyers argue that not enough has been done and that Uber should install cameras inside the cars, check if the drivers have a history, and create an alarm system that goes off when they deviate from the required route.
