Sandra Hülser has not only already been awarded the European Film Prize and received an Oscar nomination, but now she has also been awarded the famous French film prize César for her role in the film “Anatomy of a Case” (2023) honored. Sandra Hülser: The new star in the Oscar sky?
In the film by Jonathan Glatzer (54), which will be released in German cinemas on February 29th, Hülser plays Hedwig Höß, the wife of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höß. At the European Film Awards last year, they didn’t miss the opportunity to nominate the exceptional actress for her leading roles in both films: Thanks to “Anatomy of a Case”, Hülser beat her four competitors – and herself.
Just a day later, she was named “Actress of the Year” by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association before losing out at the Golden Globes despite this award. In her place, Lily Gladstone (37) was finally able to accept the award thanks to Martin Scorsese’s (81) “Killers Of The Flower Moon”.
What does this mean for Oscar chances?
Huller’s chances of an Oscar nomination were great thanks to “The Zone Of Interest” and “Anatomy of a Case”. Without being too pessimistic about the actual Oscar ceremony on the night of March 10th to 11th, it must still be noted that she has an outside chance of winning.
On the one hand, Gladstone could become the first indigenous person to win an Oscar for Best Actress, which would represent an important political statement in the USA. On the other hand, “Poor Things” lead actress Emma Stone (35) has recently been getting better and better chances with the bookmakers. If Hülser prevails against these two favorites – as well as against the other competitors Carey Mulligan (38, “Maestro”) and Annette Bening (65, “Nyad”) – it would definitely be a small sensation.
If in the end there isn’t enough for Hülser to be a golden boy, it is at least unlikely that her two works will come away completely empty-handed. “Anatomy of a Case” and “The Zone of Interest” are each nominated for five Oscars, including both for Best Picture and Best Director. They are also in the running for “Best Adapted Screenplay” (“The Zone Of Interest”) and “Best Original Screenplay” (“Anatomy of a Case”).
It would be a historic triumph
If the “Best Leading Actress” in 2024 were to be named Sandra Hülser, an almost 100-year dry spell would come to an end. Marlene Dietrich (1901-1992), who was born in what is now Berlin, was once nominated in this category for her role in “Morocco”, but she had to admit defeat to the Canadian Marie Dressler.
Luise Rainer (1910-2014), who was born in Düsseldorf, was much luckier: she even received the prestigious award in two consecutive years – in 1936 for “The Great Ziegfeld” and in 1937 for “The Good Earth”. To date, Rainer is the only German actress to win the Oscar – but perhaps only until March…
