Covid: the 45-year-old from Florence, infected in India after an adoption, has died

It is a story of courage that of Enzo Galli without unfortunately a happy ending. The man died today, at the age of 45, at the Careggi hospital in Florence, after months of agony caused by the Covid-19 infection. His story, with that of his wife, had gone viral last spring. The couple had traveled to India to adopt a baby girl, but were later surprised by the dramatic progression of the Delta variant in the Asian state.

Enzo and his wife went to India last April to adopt a girl. At the time of boarding, however, the companion remained positive, a condition that had blocked the repatriation of the whole family. Around the three, a solidarity competition soon started: in fact, the repatriation was made possible by donations (130 thousand euros) arrived from all over Italy, necessary to set up a medical flight equipped for bio-containment. But the man never managed to celebrate the return. In Italy he and his daughter had tested positive for Covid-19: the beginning of an ordeal that lasted months and unfortunately consumed yesterday. For months the doctors of the Florentine hospital tried to save his life. Months in which Galli remained on a hospital bed in the balance between life and death, facing complications to the lungs and heart, a septic shock and even dialysis. A critical picture that never stopped him from fighting until his heart stopped beating yesterday morning.

To confirm the death of the 45-year-old the lawyer and family friend Elena Rondelli. “This for me – he underlined – is the moment of prayer, silence and closeness because the life of Enzo for me was the greatest testimony of love for the family”. Emotion in Campi Bisenzio (Florence) where the mayor Emiliano Fossi said: “It is a huge tragedy for death but for all that is upstream”. “A trip abroad that had to be of great happiness – continued the mayor – because the family fulfilled the dream of life with the adoption of their child, it has become a tragedy”. “The whole community of Campi Bisenzio – he concluded – gathers around Enzo’s family, we are and we will be with them”.
