TAIBON. He hooked himself to a peg to prepare for abseiling, but as soon as he loaded his weight the peg came out of the crack in the rock and the boy fell into the void, ending up in a gully 180 meters below.

Guido Di Carpegna Brivio, 27, from Cesano Maderno (Monza Brianza), scout leader of the Milan 3-88 group, lost his life on Friday evening on the Torre Venezia, in Civetta, after completing the via Ratti. The friend who saw Di Carpegna fall spent the night on the ledge, after calling for help: the weather conditions did not allow even the helicopters enabled for night flight to get close.

Only yesterday morning it was possible to recover the lifeless body of the scout leader, “a boy in love with the mountains”, his companions recall, and his friend stuck on the face all night.

The alarm went off around 10pm on Friday, when the call from a climber who had seen his friend fall from the circular ledge at the top of the Venice Tower, before starting the “double” for the descent.

Alerted the Alpine Rescue of Agordo, a team reached the Vazzoler refuge by jeep to be taken to altitude by one of the helicopters enabled for night flight and recover the boy, 23, from Milan, stuck at 2,450 meters above sea level.

To cheer him up and update him on what was being done, a rescuer constantly contacted him on his mobile every 15/20 minutes.

Initially agreed to send the Trentino helicopter rescue, the flight was not possible, however, because the aircraft was engaged elsewhere. Around 11 pm the helicopter ambulance of the Aiut Alpin Dolomites of Bolzano arrived and immediately carried out a reconnaissance, noting that there was fog 20 meters below the point where the mountaineer was.

Once off the pitch, with the worsening of the weather the helicopter moved to Agordo, where it waited for a possible improvement until 2 am, when, finding that the weather was still bad, the crew returned. At 3 there was a small improvement, even in this case, however, the Trento helicopter ambulance – expected to approach in half an hour – did not leave due to the weather which rapidly worsened.

Only yesterday, at first light, the helicopter of the Air Service Center, which has an agreement with the Alpine Rescue Dolomiti Bellunesi, landed at the disposal of the teams and waited for a passage to open up in the persistent clouds to take off.

At 6.25 am two rescuers were boarded and the helicopter climbed to the height of the circular ledge, where one of them got off and went to meet the 23-year-old boy, who was fine although strongly shaken.

Loaded on board, the young man was taken to the base camp at Piani di Pelsa and from there accompanied to the Vazzoler to be warmed up and refreshed.

The helicopter then flew back to the wall to look for the fallen boy. The clouds went down again, a new rotation was necessary to locate the body without vita, finished 180 meters further down in a gully under the arrival of the double ropes.

When 7 rescuers landed, the anchors were equipped for lowering, reassembling and embarking the body. The recovery then took place with the Suem di Pieve di Cadore helicopter, which also took rescuers downstream.

According to the first reconstruction, the two friends had finished via Ratti yesterday around 21.30. From the circular ledge the two climbers moved to the small 5-6 meter gully leading to the start of the abseil ropes for the descent.

At the beginning of this gully there was a nail with a cord, used by some climbers to descend at the start of the abseils. The young man got hooked on that. But the nail slipped off the rock when the boy loaded the weight, causing it to fall.

The news of the death of Guido Di Carpegna Brivio came like a blow yesterday afternoon among the friends of the scout group, where the young man had long been head of the cubs, the youngest children, to become clan head this year.

“He has always been a boy who is very attentive to others”, cries Don Renato Fantoni, pastor of the Milanese parishes of Mater Amabilis and Sant’Anna to which the group belongs, “he dedicated his young life to the service of others, being the head scout with dedication and passion. A serious and profound boy, but who knew how to be ready for a joke ».
