Here’s how we should clean the ears

by admin

The human ear is an extremely delicate organ, which must be taken care of without compromising its functioning. It will therefore be necessary to be very careful because, within this, earwax is created: a substance that has the function of lubricating and protecting, but when it accumulates in excess it must be eliminated. Here’s how we should clean the ears.

The importance of proper hygiene

In some people, the accumulation of earwax can also cause serious problems that affect the hearing system. Poor auricular hygiene could then develop into:

  • ear pain;
  • dizziness and instability;
  • sensations of occlusion and rumble of the voice;
  • local diseases and infections;
  • or hearing loss or tinnitus.

It is therefore easy to understand why it is very important to practice regular cleaning and hygiene of the ears, precisely to avoid these problems. But is there a right way to wash your ears? And what are the common mistakes that are often made?

Here’s how we should clean the ears

Despite being the most common and used practice, cleaning the ears with a cotton swab is actually an error often advised against by ENTs. The use of this cotton swab, in fact, tends not to eliminate the earwax but instead to push it deeply towards the eardrum membrane. In this way, then, we will only favor its accumulation, with the risk of causing injury to the membrane itself.

Instead, we will have to use some alternative methods such as, for example, cleansing the ear with a gentle jet of warm water. Using this minimally invasive technique we will then be able to dissolve the ear wax favoring its natural release. However, remember to dry the ear canal well to avoid water stagnation.

Other methods

If, on the other hand, you think you have a wax plug, we will have to use slightly different methods. For example, we can find on the market some spray products based on an isotonic solution of sea water and sodium chloride. It will therefore be sufficient to irrigate the duct with the practical nozzle to help us eliminate the smallest formations of ear wax.

Or we could still use the wax cones. These are nothing more than oilcloth cones about 20 cm long to be inserted into the ear canal for the narrowest end. Once in position it will be necessary to turn on the cone from the opposite side thus creating a sort of vacuum that will help us to remove the ear wax by suction. Obviously, however, we will have to be careful not to burn ourselves or to the dripping of the wax, remaining concentrated throughout the procedure.

If the problems persist, or in any case you think you have some doubts about the situation of your ear, the advice of an expert is always recommended. A visit to the ENT will then give us the right information and, if necessary, clean the ears in total safety.
