Strambino. The inhabitants of Canton Romanello rise up for 4 plane trees and a lime tree “The cut plants obstructed the visibility of the exits from the condominiums”

Eventually the three old and imposing viale Marconi plants (two plane trees and a lime tree) were cut. As had been announced, two other plane trees that completed the tree-lined surrounding the municipal sports field of the capital of Strambino were demolished. But the cutting of the three plants of Viale Marconi, on the border with Romano, was not appreciated by some inhabitants of the Canton of Romanello, near the Chapel of the Madonna delle Vigne, who protested both on social networks and by writing an email then sent to the Municipality of Strambino. «I have lived in front of the three trees since the early 1960s – wrote retired former Olivettian Piermichele Monasterolo, who lives right in front of what remains of the three felled trees – where my grandfather had already lived since the early 1950s. So for a lifetime. Well, in all this time I have never had any news of any damage to be traced back to the trees. ‘ The municipality explained that it was a safety issue. In these terms: “Since the reduced size of the accesses and the limitation of visibility caused by the tree-lined road entailed continuous risks of road accidents, it was therefore necessary to take measures in order to make that point safe”, “consistent measures in the demolition of the three road trees in order to allow the redevelopment of the accesses, aimed at improving the practicability and visibility of the exit from the condominiums on Viale Marconi ».
This motivation was not enough for those who criticized the decision, including the pensioner from Strambino who, in his long email with the request for explanations sent to the Municipality, complained: “Three monuments built by nature in about a century and eliminated, forever, in a few hours from the hand of man. I would like to express – concluded Piermichele Monasterolo – my profound disappointment to an administration that paradoxically, on the one hand, says it is attentive to the problems of the landscape and its protection and promotes initiatives for the planting of trees and educational gardens, aimed at children. And on the other hand it proceeds to the killing, in my view for futile reasons that I will clarify below, of trees that were part of the landscape and characterized it for about 100 years ».
The intervention also involved two old plane trees, the largest of which was over a meter in diameter, cut, together with the three plants of Viale Marconi, for safety reasons, as the roots caused continuous, dangerous infiltration of water into the underlying in the basement of the sports field intended for changing rooms, and in the tunnel that leads to the pitch. A similar measure was taken by the Strambinese municipal council in 2019 with the killing, also due to safety problems, entrusted to the specialized company Mowing di Iori Danilo di Casalborgone, of eight other old plants, seven of which in the capital (five in via Generale Bertoldi and two in the external area of the cemetery) and one in via Maioletto, in the square of the nursery school in the hamlet of Cerone. –
