Apple today reportedly agreed to pay $50 million to settle a class-action lawsuit. In the case, consumers accused Apple of concealing the fact that the “butterfly” keyboards on its MacBook laptops were prone to failure. Apple has filed a preliminary settlement in federal court in San Jose, California, where it hopes to be approved by a judge. In addition to the $50 million in damages, MacBook owners get four years of free keyboard repairs.

The MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro keyboards suffer from sticky and unresponsive keys, according to consumers who filed the lawsuit, and a small amount of dust or debris can make typing very difficult. They also said that Apple’s service was also ineffective, and although replacement keyboards were provided, the same problems persisted.

The settlement covers purchases of MacBooks, MacBook Airs and most MacBook Pros in seven U.S. states (California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York and Washington) between 2015 and 2019 type of customers.

While agreeing to the settlement, Apple denies any wrongdoing.

Attorneys representing consumers expect up to $395 for those who replace multiple keyboards; up to $125 for those who replace one keyboard; and up to $125 for those who replace keycaps $50 compensation.

Separately, consumer law firms Girard Sharp LLP and Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith LLP may seek up to $15 million in legal fees to be deducted from a $50 million settlement fund, court documents show.
