Cerruti cuts another thirty employees. Unions: “An unexpected move”

Words sweeten medicine: what were once called layoffs and then became redundancies, can now also be defined as a “reorganization process involving 30 employees”. But the mouthful of syrup remains very bitter: it concerns the Cerruti wool mill, the last staff cut in 2019 with just under fifty workers involved. The news was first given to the unions yesterday and then, a few minutes later, to everyone through a press release. “We didn’t really expect it – says Filippo Sasso, CGIL textile secretary -. We had read a few days ago that they were looking for employees. When we went to the meeting, which we had been asking for some time after Nino Cerruti’s death, the last thing we imagined was to hear the company talking about new reductions “. The top management of the wool mill also talked about something else, as the press release itself points out and as confirmed by Sasso: the interest in the new collections shown at Milano Unica, the economic recovery, the investment in the purchase of thirty new looms. «They will consume less energy – says the trade unionist -. But there will be even less: now there are 46 ». And the doubt creeps in easily: perhaps it is one of the reasons why less staff will be needed. The workers’ representatives hope to find out next Monday, when they see Cerruti’s top management for a new meeting, “where we count – says Sasso – to have more data than we know, in the hope that the thirty employees can be relocated to the company if it is true that they expect to expand the production lines in 2023 ». An alarming number has already been told to the unions: the one million euro more that risks weighing on the 2022 budget of the wool mill due to the increase in energy costs. “But it is socially unacceptable – underlines Sasso – that the workers pay the price”.
