Generation Z employees would expect employers to make far too many adjustments, said the majority of baby boomers surveyed in a recent survey.
At the same time, half of all those surveyed in 2020 believe that Generation Z is teaching their colleagues valuable skills in the areas of automation and artificial intelligence.
78 percent of baby boomers surveyed are also not afraid of being replaced by AI. For Generation Z, however, it is 51 percent.
For the baby boomers, Generation Z is far too demanding in the workplace – at the same time, the young generation is teaching their colleagues the necessary skills in artificial intelligence. This is shown by a current survey by the market research institute YouGov, which was carried out in cooperation with the software company Slack.
The survey, in which 2020 office employees, including 849 managers, took part, examines generational relationships in the workplace in Germany – and shows a predominantly positive perception of each other between generations.

The collaboration of several generations is an advantage for the company. This is what a majority of respondents think. There is a line of conflict in the baby boomers’ perception of Generation Z: 61 percent of the baby boomers are of the opinion that the younger generation expects their employers to adapt too much to their needs.
Nevertheless, respondents assigned Generation Z an important role in the workplace because Gen Z employees impart valuable AI skills to their work colleagues. Half of all respondents think so.
Baby boomers, on the other hand, are seen as mentors who bring a real advantage to the company through their experience. 65 percent are of the opinion that the professionally experienced generation ensures calmness, especially in stressful times. Only 43 percent think that baby boomers are afraid of new things.

Millennials are the most flexible – conflicts with older colleagues are more common
61 percent of all respondents see Millennials as the more flexible generation who can quickly adapt to new tools and processes. However, millennials’ flexibility ends when they cannot understand the purpose of a particular task or process.
One in five respondents stated that their most frequent conflicts were with older work colleagues. Around half of those surveyed see poor communication and infrequent personal exchange as the main cause of conflict.

The survey shows that only a few baby boomers currently believe that AI is causing layoffs. 78 percent of baby boomers surveyed say they are not afraid that their own work will become redundant due to automation. For Generation Z, however, it is only 51 percent. 58 percent of those surveyed believe that employers need more automation, including 43 percent of the baby boomers and 69 percent of Gen Z respondents.
