Britney Spears reaches settlement with father, officially ending conservatorship

(CNN) — Britney Spears has reached a settlement with her father more than two years after the court-ordered end of the conservatorship that had given him control of her life, her lawyers announced. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed by lawyers for the pop star and her father, who confirmed the agreement to CNN.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to represent, protect, and defend Britney Spears,” the singer’s attorney, Mathew Rosengart, said in a statement. “Ms. Spears is and always will be an icon and a brilliant and courageous artist of historic and epic proportions. Although the conservatorship ended in November 2021, her wish for her freedom is truly complete now.”

Alex Weingarten, a lawyer for Spears’ father, expressed his delight at the resolution, stating: “Jamie loves his daughter very much and worked tirelessly to protect her. She wants the best for Britney, nothing less.”

Spears’ conservatorship ended in November 2021, but legal battles have persisted with attorneys for the singer and her father clashing in frequent court visits over attorney fees and accusations of inappropriate behavior in handling the conservatorship guardianship. Her father has consistently denied the accusations.

The star was placed under judicial guardianship in 2008, with her father serving as her guardian for most of the 13-year arrangement, overseeing and controlling all of his adult daughter’s finances and medical decisions. In June 2021, Spears gave explosive testimony, pleading with the judge to release her from the “abusive” guardianship.

Since the end of the conservatorship, Spears has been very active on social media, releasing new music and even publishing a memoir, “The Woman In Me,” in which she reflected on the impact the conservatorship had on her life and career. Spears’ fans have rallied behind her throughout the legal battle, celebrating her newfound freedom and artistic expression.
