“Dreaming Back to Chang’an”: “The Case of Di Gong of the Tang Dynasty” Officially Announced

The highly-anticipated ancient costume suspense detective drama “The Case of the Tang Dynasty” recently held a press conference for the “Night of the Tang Dynasty” in Xi’an. The official announcement was made that the drama will be broadcast on CCTV-8 on February 6th and exclusively on Youku.
Adapted from the novel of the same name written by famous sinologist and Dutch diplomat Goloupe, “The Case of the Tang Dynasty” combines the essence of traditional Chinese public case novels and Western detective mystery novels. The story follows the legendary adventures of Di Renjie, a famous official in the Tang Dynasty known for solving mysterious cases, punishing corrupt officials, and helping the people while also unraveling the mystery of his own life experiences.
The premiere of “The Case of the Emperor of the Tang Dynasty” was fittingly held in the ancient capital of Chang’an, known today as Xi’an. The press conference garnered congratulatory messages from cultural figures, including Yu Jian, the Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands, who expressed excitement about the drama’s potential to introduce Western audiences to Chinese culture.
Produced by Youku, Ruyi Pictures, 2016 Film and Television, and Leihai Guanlang Film and Television, the drama features a star-studded cast, including Yiwei Yi, Wang Likun, and Zhong Chuxi, with special guest appearances by Zhang Jiayi and Zhang Ruoyun.
The drama contains nine independent yet interconnected mysterious cases, each designed to captivate viewers with its strong reasoning and logic. Director Li Yunliang emphasized that the drama aims to convey the values of righteousness, fairness, and justice represented by Di Renjie’s character.
The production team also took great care to recreate the diverse landscapes and intricate details of the Tang Dynasty, showcasing the natural scenery and pyrotechnic humanities of regions such as Chang’an, Penglai, and Lanfang.
With over 5.6 million reservations on Youku, “The Case of the Emperor of the Tang Dynasty” has already broken records for the platform, setting high expectations for its upcoming broadcast.
