An Iranian court ruled recently that director Asghar Farhadi’s new film “A Hero” was convicted of plagiarizing the documentary “All Winners, All Losers” made by his former student Azad Masizade during his studies. Convicted and no appeal!
The second judge is ruling on the specific sentence, and in the worst case, Farhadi will hand over all of “One Hero”‘s theatrical and online revenue to Masizadeh, and may even face jail time.
Farhadi also previously filed a countersuit against his student, saying his remarks were defamatory of himself and denied all previous allegations. However, the court also dismissed the lawsuit, both finding that Farhadi plagiarized.
Farhadi’s lawyer, Kawi Ladd, said that there are three lawsuits about “One Hero”: Masizadeh v. Plagiarism, Masizadeh v. Obtaining all the domestic and foreign income of the film, Prototype character v. Farhadi defamation. Investigators dismissed the latter two lawsuits and issued restraining orders dismissing them. Rudd said the first lawsuit is pending final judgment and will be reopened in Criminal Court No. 2 and then in the Court of Appeal.

The film tells the story of Rahim (Amir Zadidi), who is jailed for not being able to pay his debts, as he looks forward to spending time with his girlfriend Falconde (Sahar Goldst), his sister and a language patient Handicapped sons reunited. During his two-day parole period, his girlfriend found a handbag containing gold coins on the street. If the gold coins were sold, there might be enough money to convince the creditors to forgive the debt, but when the value of the gold coins was lower than they thought, Rahim decided to put up a notice to return the gold coins to the original owners.
