The Urology team at the “Parini” Hospital in Aosta has successfully performed a complex operation on a patient from Piedmont, offering a solution to urinary incontinence even for those who have undergone multiple abdominal operations.
The procedure involved the removal of a penile prosthesis implanted five years ago at another center, following the removal of the bladder for a tumor, and the placement of an artificial sphincter for severe urinary incontinence. The surgery was technically challenging, as the patient’s anatomical conditions did not allow for the usual positioning of the artificial sphincter next to the bladder or in the abdomen. Instead, the device was inserted under the kidney with the help of a special kit normally used for the reservoir of a penile prosthesis.
Led by the director of the Urology Complex Structure, Emanuele Castelli, the team of specialists, including andrologist Emanuele Baldassarre and Dr. Domenico Pone, successfully completed the operation on March 27. This innovative procedure, named “AUSTA 1500,” is the first of its kind and has shown promising results for patients with complex medical histories.
The success of this surgery marks a significant advancement for the field of andrology in the Aosta Valley region. The team plans to present their technique at national and international symposiums later this year, showcasing their groundbreaking approach to treating urinary incontinence for patients with unique medical needs.
