As a young woman, she suffered from migraines due to her menstrual cycle – but when menopause began, the illness became a war within her: The presenter and podcaster Bettina Rust (56), she says in an interview with the health magazine “Apotheken Umschau”, was “alone with her terrible demons. I couldn’t do anything anymore: I couldn’t walk the dog, I couldn’t use my cell phone to ask for help.”
She had 15 days of pain a month and asked herself: “How much longer can I endure this? I had to give up control of my life for days.” She suffered badly for about two years and describes the migraines as “evil, marauding spirits that kick your brain from the inside with thick combat boots.”
The problem: Migraine is an invisible illness and, says Rust, “still stigmatized. If you come into the office with an arm in a cast, everyone says: ‘Oh dear, where can I sign?’ Migraines are usually invisible to the outside world.
She would like to see “a more natural, sensitive approach to this illness.” In her case, the illness now only rarely returns – thanks to an injection for migraine prophylaxis, which works for Rust. Today she says: “The medication gave me my life back.”
A neurologist will assess which treatment is most suitable for migraines in each individual case. He or she also explains possible side effects.
