Politics takes the field in Lazio in favor of women’s health. Specifically for breast cancer, networking and focusing on the need to update the Diagnostic-Therapeutic-Assistive Paths, which in the healthcare sector are better known as Pdta. Not only that: the need has also emerged to have not generic oncology networks, but ones dedicated to the various organs and systems. These are the concrete ideas that emerged from the conference “Per Amarla – Lazio Region Breast Path and Network” held at the headquarters of the Lazio Regional Council. The president of the Lazio Regional Council, Antonello Aurigemma, has made these requests his own.
“This – he explained – is a meeting to try to support those who work in this sector. On this day all the actors are present, those who treat the women, those who receive the treatments, those who produce the drugs, those in charge of organizing the Pdta, of the diagnostic, therapeutic and care pathways, which are now a bit dated, given that they were created over nine years ago. In nine years there has been an enormous evolution, not only from a scientific point of view, but also technical, digital. Updating them, and the Region being able to act as a ‘prod’ for the ministry, would be “to the benefit of the patients and also to the advantage of those in charge of care”.
“From listening to those who live on the front lines of this problem – he then highlighted – the need emerged for the Lazio Region not to tackle a pathology such as cancer with a generic oncology network, but to divide it by organ, starting from the breast network which was a flagship of our Region, restoring it with all the innovations and new techniques”. “We have 16 breast centers within the Region – the president of the Lazio Region Francesco Rocca then highlighted – we will do everything to increase the number and the quality. I must say that it is already a very high quality, because we have one of the lowest flight rates in all of Italy.
People who go for treatment outside the Region account for only 8% of cases. This is the sign of good healthcare that we must continue to support, pay attention to and improve.”

In the past legislature we adopted various measures to improve the quality of life of patients. I am thinking of the support provided through funds to local health authorities for the purchase of wigs and the possibility of promoting immediate breast reconstruction, thus avoiding two separate operations”.
While councilor Alessia Savo, president of the VII Regional Commission for Health, Social Policies, Socio-Health Integration and Welfare, concluded by presenting the bill she is working on which concerns the Measures for the strengthening of population screening on breast cancer and the establishment of the Risk assessment for patients and families with germline gene mutations.
“As president of the VII Regional Commission for Health, Social Policies, Socio-Health Integration and Welfare, but above all as a doctor and as a woman, I immediately intended to make my contribution to raising awareness among women, healthcare facilities, institutions and civil society towards conscious prevention and responsible: the bill I am working on concerns “Measures to strengthen population screening on breast cancer and establishment of the risk assessment program for patients and families with germline gene mutations”. “I am absolutely convinced that through synergistic and networking work our
institution will implement important and effective actions to strengthen prevention, research and assistance. In a word: health. Today, in particular, that of women.” “Let’s love each other also through prevention” – said Eleonora Berni Fdi – “breast cancer is one of the most widespread cancers and we must understand the importance of finding more effective communication tools to involve women in a screening process necessary for early diagnosis of breast-related diseases. It is not enough to send letters, we must work together with all the players in the health system to make them understand the importance, especially in younger people, of being active protagonists of their own health“. And for Emanuela Droghei of the PD “there is a need to provide a lot of information on prevention and treatment tools and, at the same time, to continue to support research. Alongside these two initiatives there are two equally important ones such as medical tattoos for scars and the establishment of a day dedicated to raising awareness and information for all the townspeople and citizens of Lazio regarding prevention and treatment tools. Now I believe it is important to improve the organization of the network to support sick women. A lot has been done but there is still a lot to do”
Finally Orlando Angelo Tripodi, president of the Labor commission and deputy in the Pisana Health commission: “The commitment of political decision-makers at various institutional levels cannot fail to start from the analysis of territorial realities, highlighting the shadows and lights of the regional oncology network We should ask ourselves why we see the frequent problem of waiting lists to undergo diagnostic tests, despite the Region’s screening campaigns. We need to review whether the screening campaigns really work. How many show up for the scheduled appointment and how many desert it giving up the opportunity offered by the Region? If it is true that prevention is the starting point, it is from here that we must rethink, expand and study and perhaps reprogram communication and prevention campaigns, also in light of the evidence that scientific research has achieved regarding pharmacological treatments with curative intent”.
