Positivity was found in a man, Slovenian, who lives and works in our country in Monfalcone, in the province of Gorizia. And precisely in Slovenia, the birthplace of man, the problem of mouse fever is becoming very serious after that beyond 200 people were infected with Hantavirus transmitted by mice and several of them ended up hospitalized.
What at first appeared to be only an anomalous die-off of mice, therefore, is turning out to be more serious than expected and risks turning into health emergency in Slovenia with repercussions, however, also on the Italian border where exchanges are very frequent. As the Messenger, the man showed up a few days ago at the Gorizia emergency room with clear symptoms related to Hantavirus and was taken over and registered by the Asugi Prevention Department. Fortunately, the man is not in serious condition but his case now raises concern for a possible outbreak of Hantavirus due to infected mice also on the Italian side of the border.
Fortunately there is no risk of human-to-human infection but you can easily contract the pathogen, which gives symptoms very similar to those of Covid, even simply going for a walk in the countryside along the border areas. As the Ministry of Health explains, Hantavirus infection occurs by direct contact with the feces, saliva and urine of infected rodents but also by inhalation of viruses through rodent excrement. Hantavirus diseases can be characterized by renal involvement (nephritis) and hemorrhages or by one pulmonary syndrome. “These are acute diseases in which the vascular endothelium is damaged with a consequent increase in vascular permeability, hypotension, haemorrhagic manifestations and shock” explain from the ministry.
