From Star Wars to Streaming Wars: Disney wants to overtake Netflix sooner than expected

The third season of The Mandalorianthen a new series that acts as a prequel to a spinoff of the main saga of Star Warsthen another serial set in the universe of Star Wars and with Jude Law as the protagonist and then again a film based on a fantasy book that (almost) no one remembers and also some updates on next chapter of Indiana Jones: on the occasion of the 2022 edition of the Star Wars Celebration event, Disney has lined up an impressive amount of new productions that will delight fans.

The impression is that the company understandably wants to make money investments made over the years by taking over brands and franchises of great value and great appeal to the public, further accelerating the approach to Netflix. Because obviously all of this new content will arrive on Disney Plus, which at the moment is the only one of the big streaming channels that it seems not to suffer from the crisis: in the first 3 months of 2022 it gained another 8 million subscribersand second JustWatch data managed to take 18% of the market, while Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have lost 5% and 4% respectively since January 2021.

More: analysts’ estimates predict not only that overall subscribers to the platforms will double over 3-4 years, but above all that Disney Plus goes from 130 million to 285 million, surpassing Netflix (which in 2026 would stop at 270), Amazon (just over 240 million) and Apple TV Plus (less than 40 million).

The latest 3 news in the Star Wars universe

Among the announcements, the least predictable one concerned the series Andorin which Diego Luna will return as Cassian Andor, one of the protagonists of Rogue Oneperhaps the most beautiful of the (not very beautiful) spinoffs of Star Wars: According to what has been explained, it takes place about 5 years before the film, will last 12 episodes and will arrive on Disney Plus starting August 31.

Furthermore, it has been confirmed that the Mandalorian (and Grogu, of course) will return to streaming starting in February 2023, after briefly appearing in The book of Boba Fettis that Jude Law will be among the protagonists of Skeleton Crewanother series set in the world of Star Warsprobably more oriented towards a less adult audience.

Oltre Star Wars, fra Indiana Jones e Willow

Beyond that, Disney also unveiled the first trailer for Willowa new serial that starts from a little-known book by Wayland Drew, in turn linked to a 1988 film, directed by Ron Howard and produced by Lucas, who also put his hand to the script. It is a fantasy setting story, in which the intention was (and probably still is) to replicate the success of productions such as The Lord of the Rings and indeed Star Wars. According to what was announced, it should arrive in streaming from 30 November 2022 and will delight nostalgics with some spring on their shoulders.

In the end, Indiana Jones: on social media, those of Lucasfilm showed the first official image of the fifth film in the saga, confirming that the protagonist will really be Harrison Ford (who turns 80 in July) and that the director will be James Mangold. And also that to see it we will have to wait until 2023.
