It will be loud in Germany’s sports halls and arenas in 2024: whether at the European Handball Championship in January, at tournaments, league and cup games in basketball, volleyball, hockey or in other sports – fan support with clapboards, horns, drums and whistles is fun and for many people it is part of the fan culture at indoor sporting events. What some people underestimate is that loud cheering poses risks to your hearing, both for your own hearing and for those of those nearby. “If a volume of over 85 decibels is reached close to the unprotected ear, hearing can be damaged,” explains Eberhard Schmidt, President of the Federal Guild of Hearing Care Professionals (biha).

The hearing acoustics master, who also specializes in children as a pediatric acoustician, says: “Protecting your hearing in loud environments prevents tinnitus, hearing loss and loud trauma. Reliable hearing protection in noise is recommended, especially for sensitive children’s ears, in order to avoid early irreparable hearing loss to be avoided at a young age.” If everything suddenly sounds muffled after a loud sporting event, if you have a constant tone or the feeling of cotton in your ear, these could be signs of hearing damage or tinnitus. This should be clarified professionally as quickly as possible.

There are different solutions for hearing protection. The simple disposable versions, colloquially known as “earplugs”, are just one possible variant. But there are also reusable, more sustainable solutions. “For example, individual hearing protection that is made and adapted to your personal ear canal by hearing care professionals is suitable for repeated use,” says Eberhard Schmidt. It is small and handy, reliably blocks out noise and fits perfectly, barely noticeable in the ears. If desired, filters can be installed in this to protect against high volumes but allow speech to pass through. This means conversations can be understood in a noisy environment with your ears protected. Capsule hearing protection can also be used again and again. The so-called “Mickey mice” offer reliable noise protection and are easy for children to handle.

Hearing care professionals can advise on various hearing protection solutions. They also offer professional hearing tests, which are usually free. If there is a hearing loss, as highly qualified specialists you can compensate for this in the best possible way by customizing your hearing system. With over 7,300 hearing care companies and around 18,000 hearing care professionals, the hearing care industry supplies around 3.7 million people in Germany with the most modern hearing systems.
