Anyone who has elevated cholesterol levels will not initially experience any symptoms. Too much cholesterol in the blood can cause vascular constriction and, as a result, high blood pressure. Blocked blood vessels, in turn, increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke. With SymbioLife® Cholesterol Control, SymbioPharm GmbH offers a new dietary supplement that supports normal cholesterol levels*. It contains a combination of selected lactic acid bacteria and phytosterols*.

Cholesterol is a vital building block in our cell membranes and the precursor of bile acids and certain hormones. However, if there is an excess, the cholesterol can build up on the walls of the blood vessels as plaques and thus narrow the vessels. This reduces blood circulation and high blood pressure is the result. A blockage of the vessels supplying the heart or brain can trigger a heart attack or stroke.

Our body produces most of the cholesterol itself; a maximum of a third comes from animal foods such as eggs, butter, meat and fish. Changing your diet to plant-based foods is therefore beneficial, but has a limited effect.

Lactic acid bacteria against elevated cholesterol levels

Intestinal bacteria support our digestion in many ways and have other positive effects in the body. Lactic acid bacteria in particular can bind cholesterol to their cell membrane, which is then excreted in the stool.

The special bacterium Lactobacillus plantarum LPLDL® breaks down bile acids, which our body then excretes in large numbers.(1) As a result, the liver has to produce new bile acids because we need them to digest fat. As a result, the liver removes cholesterol from the blood – the values for total cholesterol and the “bad” LDL cholesterol decrease.(1+2)

Phytosterols support normal cholesterol levels

Phytosterols are secondary plant substances and are similar in structure to cholesterol. If we absorb phytosterols, they compete with cholesterol for transport mechanisms in the intestine. The displaced cholesterol remains in the intestine and is then excreted in the stool. Although our body produces cholesterol itself, it cannot completely compensate for the inhibited absorption. This reduces the levels of LDL and total cholesterol.

“Good” and “bad” cholesterol

So that our body can transport the non-water-soluble cholesterol in the blood, it uses lipoproteins – complexes of fats and proteins that bind the cholesterol. Experts differentiate between different proportions based on their density: LDL cholesterol transports cholesterol from the liver into the body. It is considered “bad” cholesterol because high LDL levels are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Atherosclerotic plaques in the blood vessels are made of chemically modified LDL cholesterol.

High total cholesterol also increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.

In contrast, HDL cholesterol is considered “good” cholesterol because it transports cholesterol from the organs to the liver. The liver converts cholesterol into bile acids that can be excreted.

SymbioLife® Cholesterin Control

The dietary supplement is available in two pack sizes: with 40 (PZN 18757755) and with 80 (PZN 18757761) tablets. It provides 4 billion colony-forming units (CFU) of the special lactic acid bacterial strain Lactobacillus plantarum LPLDL® and 800 mg (= 0.8 g) of phytosterols per daily dose (= 2 tablets).

Recommended dosage: Take 2 tablets per day (preferably after main meals) without chewing with a glass of water.
