The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is testing a new universal mRNA flu vaccine

Posted by (PNo Editorial Board), Wednesday 17 May 2023 12:04:00

Il National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) recently launched a trial of a new universal mRNA influenza vaccine.

The first step of the study will involve 50 volunteers aged between 18 and 49, in order to determine the most effective dose of the vaccine. Next, the new vaccine will be compared with the currently used seasonal quadrivalent vaccine to assess its ability to protect against flu.

The new vaccine uses a portion of haemagglutinin, a protein characteristic of flu viruses, to boost immunity against the flu. This protein has two portions: one that undergoes frequent mutations and a more stable one, with similar characteristics between different influenza viruses. The vaccine relies on this second portion of the protein, which could give it the ability to offer long-lasting protection against various flu viruses.

Hugh Auchincloss, director of NIAID, commented on the importance of a universal flu vaccine, saying it could eliminate the need to develop specific seasonal flu vaccines annually and reduce the frequency with which patients need to get the flu shot.

Auchincloss also highlighted the pandemic potential of some influenza virus strains, highlighting that a universal influenza vaccine could be a crucial defense in containing the spread of future influenza pandemics.
