British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has authorized British airstrikes against Houthi military positions in Yemen to repel attacks by Iranian-backed rebels on ships transiting the Red Sea. The Times writes it.
The UK is expected to join the US and other allies in carrying out the mission “shortly”, the newspaper writes. The Houthi attacks have severely disrupted international trade on what is a key route between Europe and Asia.
The Prime Minister has called an emergency cabinet meeting at this evening to brief ministers on Britain’s military commitment. The meeting followed an earlier meeting of the government’s ‘Cobra’ emergency committee and the National Security Council to discuss the crisis. Keir Starmer, the Labor leader, and Lindsay Hoyle, the Speaker of the House of Commons, were informed of the military intervention.
