Unveiling the Role of Forensic Experts in Legal Practice: UNED’s Free Course on Forensic Medicine

UNED Zamora Offers Free Course on Role of Forensic Doctors in Legal Field

The importance of forensic experts in the legal field is often overlooked by the general public. However, a new free course organized by UNED Zamora aims to shed light on the crucial role these professionals play in criminal and incapacitation cases. Titled “Role of the Forensic Doctor and relationships with other professionals in legal medical practice,” the course will take place on April 29 and 30 and has already attracted 60 registered participants.

The director of the course, Sonia Calaza López, a professor of procedural law at UNED, will highlight the significance of forensic work beyond autopsies. The course coordinator, José Hernández de la Fuente, emphasized the importance of expert evidence gathered by forensic doctors, which often influences judicial decisions.

Eva Maria Brave Blasco, the coroner of the Institute of Legal Medicine of Zamora, will provide detailed information on the functions of forensic doctors during the course. A round table discussion, open to the public, will also be held to further explore this topic.

The practical part of the course on April 30 will focus on the interrelationship between forensic professionals and other legal operators, such as lawyers, legal psychologists, emergency services, and State Security Forces. The event will conclude with a round table discussion where students can ask questions and discuss the role of forensics in legal procedures.

Hernández de la Fuente noted that the course aims to dispel misconceptions about forensic medicine, particularly those fueled by popular TV shows like CSI. By educating professionals in the legal field about the functions of forensic experts, the course seeks to improve the overall understanding of how forensic evidence can aid in resolving complex legal cases involving injuries, homicides, and natural deaths.
