New Gym in Genova Finally Ready After Lengthy Delay

Genova residents can finally rejoice as a new gym in via Porro is set to open its doors after over three years of construction. The inauguration is scheduled for Saturday, February 1, marking a long-awaited moment for the community.

The new gym, located on the former construction site of the new bridge, has been in the works for years, facing considerable delays and setbacks along the way. Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, the owner of the walls, began works in December 2020 as part of a broader redevelopment project in the area under the San Giorgio bridge. However, the conditions of the building proved to be worse than expected, leading to the need for modifications to the original plan.

Michele Colnaghi, president of the Central West Municipality, explained, “During the works, infiltration and structural problems were found. Therefore RFI had to modify the program of interventions. We also collaborated as the Municipality, our requests were accepted, and we reached the end of the works.”

Several organizations, including Hitachi Sts, the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation, and the Municipality of Genoa, contributed to the project, which includes a sports association-driven gym on the lower floor and the installation of a large screen for conferences and meetings.

The new gym also aims to address the lack of physical education spaces for educational institutions in the area. Colnaghi emphasized, “We have many schools in the area that only teach physical education theory due to a lack of space. The gym in the civic center is currently closed and cannot be used.”

The new gym is expected to serve as a vital sporting and social hub for residents of Sampierdarena and Certosa, filling a crucial need in the community.
