L’stroke it occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off. The second most common type of stroke, behind ischemic stroke, is lhemorrhagic stroke. This happens when a blood vessel inside the skull bursts and bleeds in and around the brain. It was demonstrated that poor lifestyle decisions increase the risk of a hemorrhagic stroke.
Research suggests that even seemingly innocuous decisions can increase the risk of having a hemorrhagic stroke. A study published in the journal ‘Nutrients’ examined the associations between dinner time and stroke mortality riskcoronary heart disease (CHD) and total cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Although the researchers found no association between mealtimes and the risk of CHD or CVD, they found one for stroke.
A total of 28,625 males and 43,213 females, aged 40 to 79 years, who were CVD-free, were involved in this study. Participants were divided into three groups: the early dinner group (before 8pm), the irregular dinner group and the late dinner group (after 8pm).
Researchers collected data via a diet assessment questionnaire. These data were then compared with the mortality data of each participant. Compared to the group that dines before, there was an increased risk of mortality from haemorrhagic stroke for the group that dined at irregular times.
However, there is no significant association between dinner time and the risk of mortality from other types of stroke, CHD and CVD.
“We found that adopting an irregular schedule for dinner versus dinner before 8pm is associated with an increased risk of mortality from hemorrhagic stroke.“Wrote the researchers. “As far as we know, our study is the first to investigate the association between dinner time and the risk of cardiovascular mortality.”
