Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Hong Kong on Thursday (June 30) to attend an event marking the 25th anniversary of the handover of Hong Kong’s sovereignty.
Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan arrived in Hong Kong by high-speed rail in the afternoon of Hong Kong time. The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Carrie Lam, her husband, Lin Zhaobo, and Luo Huining, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Republic of China, greeted them on the platform of the high-speed rail station.
Hong Kong media expect Xi Jinping and his wife to attend a welcome dinner hosted by Carrie Lam in the evening, which will be attended by many current and incoming officials, including Chief Executive-designate Li Jiachao.

Hong Kong police have stepped up security in the core areas of Xi Jinping’s visit to Hong Kong.
Xi will return to mainland China in the evening, before attending events related to the anniversary of the handover on Friday (July 1).
The day’s activities are expected to include a flag-raising ceremony and a swearing-in ceremony for the new Hong Kong government officials, but officials have so far not announced which ceremonies Xi Jinping will attend.
