Prof. Dr. Tino Ullrich, holder of the Professorship of Applied Analysis at the Faculty of Mathematics at Chemnitz University of Technology, was honored with the Best Paper Award 2023 from the renowned Journal of Complexity. Together with Prof. Dr. Felix Voigtlaender and Dr. Thomas Jahn from the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, he published a groundbreaking work entitled “Sampling numbers of smoothness classes via ℓ¹-minimization“, in which new methods for the reconstruction of functions from partial data are developed.

The core question in this mathematical area of approximation theory is the reconstruction of, for example, location-dependent physical quantities based on point measurements, the so-called samples, which are often only sparsely available. The goal is to achieve the lowest possible error with as few samples as possible. Both the selection of measuring points and the methods for error approximation play a crucial role here. Here, surprisingly, the superiority of nonlinear methods in connection with random measurements compared to known linear estimators was shown. The methods developed by the three researchers lead to a wealth of new insights in this area and pave the way for future research projects.

The outstanding quality of the paper was recognized with the Best Paper Award 2023 by the Journal of Complexity committee, consisting of researchers Joseph Dick (University of New South Wales, Sydney) and Ding-Xuan Zhou (School of Mathematics and Statistics, Sydney). The three researchers will share the $4,000 prize money equally and will be publicly recognized at the MCQMC international conference in Waterloo, Canada, in September. Prof. Ullrich considers this award to be extremely prestigious and emphasizes the appreciation and broad response in the professional community: “It is very motivating to see how other scientists are already taking up our results and developing them further.”
