«As in every season, even more so in the Belluno area and in the mountains, the recruitment of catering operators is opening up, in hotels and throughout the tourism sector. Then there is the question highlighted by the president of Confindustria Berton regarding the lack of workers with the skills currently required by companies. I would like to remind you that in a context such as the current one, with institutional shortcomings and reforms to be implemented, we had started in Belluno a significant experience of replacing the missing tools: a Table on active policies with a strong comparison between trade unions, trade associations and Veneto Lavoro ».
The Table had begun to work precisely on the issue of skills, at the center of the alarm raised by the president.
«I believe that today more than ever it is necessary to restart the work of that Table, pending legislative interventions that go in the right direction. Furthermore, Confindustria has the overall picture of corporate crises, as well as the requests for professionalism and particular skills of companies in health. We work on this front and strengthen the points of contact and collaboration with the school system. If there is the will, we will be able to build responses quickly to generate stable and quality employment that guarantees businesses and workers ”.
Why do so many young people refuse the jobs proposed to them?
“To tell the truth, I don’t see all these young people walking around the streets of Belluno, quite the contrary. I rather see a province that is heading towards strong demographic imbalances and which, more than other parts of the country, needs to reinvest in itself with a great strategic drive that will get it out of isolation. If this happens, the rest will be a natural consequence, including the end of the bleeding of under 30s, which have dropped by 20% in a few years “.
But why do some refuse the job offers that exist?
“If this happens, it is because they already have a job or are hoping for an improvement in their working conditions. So the issue of just remuneration remains on the table in its entirety, starting with the waiter or the cook, and ending with the specialized workers. Let us rather ask ourselves why a young person prefers to go to work abroad as a cook than to do it here. Is it just because here he earns 1,500 / 2,000 euros for the same job and twice as much abroad? In our country there is a wage issue to be addressed ».
Why is it difficult to relocate possibly redundant people?
“For the difficulty in matching job supply and demand and intercepting the professionalism needs of companies in a way of working that changes quickly and that requires more and more transversal skills, which are relational and teamwork, problem solving, digital, organizational. The competences must be redesigned, also through the territorial table ».
Is it true that there will be a boom in hiring in September?
“I hope so, just as I hope that the reforms that are so longed for and necessary to make the country-system competitive are actually implemented.”
In which sectors in the province of Belluno?
“If there is a recovery – the real and lasting one – traditional sectors will benefit from it, as is already happening: eyewear and induced in the first place, a sector with a strong export vocation with the recovery of overseas markets, but also services to the person, tourism, construction and shipbuilding among others. We would also like to be reassured about the urgent and positive solution of dramatic crises that risk having enormous social repercussions: Acc and Ideal. Unfortunately, today we are not calm, beyond many affirmations of good intentions and many wishes, time is inexorably slipping away and there are still no concrete solutions on the table: this worries us a lot ». –
