According to an article by Wall Street Journal based on messages and documents from 2018 and 2020, as well as interviews with former employees, crypto exchange Binance has been looking to hire Gary Gensler as a consultant before he became chairman of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission.
Gensler, a former chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, was approached by the crypto firm in 2018 and 2019 while teaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Journal reported.
Messages sent by Binance executives and viewed by the newspaper indicate that Ella Zhang, head of Binance’s venture investing department at the time, e Harry Zhouco-founder of the company Koi Trading which invests in Binance, they met with Gensler in October 2018. Once Gensler turned down the consultant position, Zhou wrote in the chat:
