Deforestation of protected trees in the Treviso area. The complaint is made to the carabinieri

Leagambiente discovers a new destruction on the Piave. “The area is private but an abuse has been committed”

TREVISO. For some time now, it has become increasingly difficult for environmental associations and lovers of the Piave to keep track of all the deforestation or modification of the territory. They follow each other quickly, too.

But the latest discovery, implemented between June and July, has already been reported by Legambiente Piavenire to the forest police, as well as to the Municipality of Maserada, the Civil Engineers of Treviso and the Forest Service of the Veneto Region.

The complaint

In this case, it is a question of deforestation in a private area included in the SPA (special protection area) of the Piave. Ash, hornbeam, hazelnut, a few beech trees and meters and meters of shrubs have been cut in via Matteotti, in Candelù. The report has already received an inspection by the municipal police of Maserada. “Being about twenty meters from the bank of the Piave river, the area falls within the riparian and floodplain belt subject to the constraints established by the EU legislation on valuable naturalistic realities falling within the Natura 2000 network, as indicated by a series of tables affixed in plain sight . It is a site of undoubted naturalistic value, which together with others enrich the fluvial and floodplain areas of our River », reads the complaint. “An abuse has been committed, we ask for the naturalistic restoration of an area of great naturalistic value inserted in a park that is slowly becoming the collective heritage of the coastal communities”, argues the Legambiente Piavenire club.

Previous

But the one implemented in Candelù is only the latest in a series of interventions on the vegetation that the environmental associations, and in some cases even the municipalities, are unable to explain. The first, and most violent, was staged in January in Cimadolmo, where the Veneto Region, as part of a project for the recovery of all the plants made unsafe by the Vaia storm, authorized the cutting of hundreds of meters of trees. and shrubs on the banks of the Piave.

But there, the visitors of the Piave and the associations are ready to swear, there was absolutely nothing unsafe. Indeed, perfectly healthy trees would have been removed, which indeed contributed to the tightness of the banks. A few weeks later a similar intervention was carried out in Spresiano in the locality of Palazzon. Dozens of trees were cut by chainsaws, apparently without explanation. Right there Legambiente and the Municipality of Spresiano are working on an educational nature trail for school children. A project that risked being compromised by the intervention of the chainsaws.

The looting

The deforestation is only the latest of the looting of the Piave. First there was the excavation of millions of cubic meters of gravel, in some cases “justified” by the need to regulate the embankments.

A conduct which, however, according to Legambiente, has narrowed the river, forcing it to erode, and in fact increasing its danger.

Then a few years ago the wild race to viticulture led to several concessions right in the floodplain area, where more space was taken away from the river. Space that the Region would like to give back to him by building the expansion coffers of Ciano del Montello
