Free Voters leader Hubert Aiwanger does not believe in early elections

The government in Germany has recently suffered massively in surveys. From the point of view of observers, this is now even a conceivable reason why the government could collapse. In some cases, more than 15% of the votes are missing from the absolute majority of votes. According to a Forsa survey, the FDP is said to have received less than 5% of the vote. Nevertheless: Hubert Aiwanger, Deputy Prime Minister of Bavaria from the Free Voters, expects there to be early elections.

No new elections – rule until the “bitter end”

This is what the politician said on a “Maischberger” program in which he was asked about the prospects.

Specifically: Hubert Aiwanger expressed reservations about the prospect of early elections in the discussion on “maischberger”, a talk show format on the ARD broadcaster. Although he is not opposed to such a scenario, he is not pushing forward the demand for it vigorously, as he sees the possibilities for such a political change as limited.

As a leading representative of the Free Voters, who would like to expand their political presence from the Bavarian to the national level, he sees the appeal to the incumbent government to resign from office as unpromising. In his expectations, Aiwanger assumes that the current coalition will remain in office until the last possible moment, despite the risks for each party involved.

At least this would actually be plausible: if the number of votes was lower, some of the MPs would lose their mandates – prematurely. What interest could the government or the Bundestag have in self-dissolution?
