Goggia, a career full of laurels and injuries – News

He always skis at the limit, sometimes even beyond. Even in training. It is a career full of successes but also dotted with many injuries, that of Sofia Goggia, the Italian skiing champion, who often ran into physical problems caused by disastrous falls and the premise of prodigious ascents. Of course, Goggia skiing – free and super-giant – is a discipline of speed, all the more dangerous the more it is contested on the edge of risk. But today’s fall is only the latest in a series that has brought together about ten since 2007.

The first accident dates back to 14 years ago, when the Italian champion had yet to turn 15: rupture of the cruciate ligament and meniscus of her right knee. A year later the other meniscus in his right knee tore.

They seem like memories of the past but the account with bad luck is not yet closed for the very young skier from Bergamo: in February 2011 in Altenmarkt she suffered a head injury and a muscle injury.

In 2012 another traumatic stop. In Andalo he breaks the cruciate and meniscus of his right knee again while participating in the giant European Cup.

In 2013 in Lake Louise during the World Cup downhill he broke the cruciate and the two menisci of his left knee. An accident-free period begins that lasts five years. And it is the period of many successes that culminate with the Olympic gold in 2018 in PyeongChang.

At the end of 2018, in October, in Hintertux in Austria he fractured his right peroneal malleolus due to a fall during training. On 9 February 2020 in Garmisch he fractured the radius of his left arm.

And again in Garmisch in 2021 he broke his knee once again while riding along a tourist track after the race was cancelled: this time it was a compound fracture of the lateral tibial plateau.

In Cortina on 23 January 2022 he suffered a microfracture of the fibula, a sprain of his left knee and a cruciate ligament injury. After a record recovery of 23 days he wins an incredible Olympic silver in Yanqing, China.
