In 2012, Honduras became the first country in the world to allow the establishment of company-run private cities with extensive autonomous status. After years of popular protests and the change of government in 2022, the reversal of the private cities began. But in reality they still exist and resistance to them is growing again. Meanwhile, gene therapy experiments in one of the private cities show why the autonomous enclaves have aroused the interest of the biotechnology industry.
