When Russia invaded Ukraine in February, Western countries imposed economic sanctions on a group of influential Russian billionaires known as oligarchs. The goal was to hit the financiers of Vladimir Putin’s war.

But who are these oligarchs? And what ties do they have with the Russian president? Through the stories of two of them, Roman Abramovič and Mikhail Khodorkovskij, the Guardian examined how the KGB and Putin’s experience in the secret services influence the dynamics of their relations.
