“In a world that talks about war, Colombia is talking about peace”: Petro in Munich

President Gustavo Petro addressed the audience at the Munich Security Conference, together with the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, to discuss the path to peace in Colombia and the world.

During his speech at the event, which was attended by nearly 50 heads of State and Government, the Colombian president emphasized the need to build social justice as a fundamental tool to overcome conflicts and achieve peace.

“In a world that talks about war, Colombia is talking about peace,” said Petro, highlighting the country’s efforts to resolve an armed conflict that has lasted for 75 years. He pointed out that Colombia has gone through various stages in its history marked by violence.but that the key to moving forward has been to work on building a more just society.

Petro emphasized the deep social inequalities present in Colombia, which have been inherited from a past of slavery and antidemocratic structures in the economy and society. However, dHe stressed that during the last 30 years, the country has advanced in its pacification processmainly through measures that seek to reduce economic inequality and guarantee dignity for all citizens.

The Colombian president also recognized the challenges that the country still faces in terms of human rights and internal violence, but highlighted that the focus on social justice has been fundamental to move towards a future of peace and reconciliation.

Accompanied by Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo and the Colombian ambassador to Germany, Yadir Salazar Mejía, President Petro made it clear that Colombia remains committed to building peace and social justice, both nationally and internationally.
