International Biodiversity Day | Bird species monitored in the first continent of the Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River doubled in 5 years

Meeting Point News May 22 is International Day for Biological Diversity. Nanjing Yangtze River New Jezhou National Wetland Park recently released a biodiversity monitoring report. The report shows that the number of species monitored in the park last year reached 1,191, an increase of 190 species over the previous year.

In early summer, Xinjizhou Wetland Park is full of greenery, like an “emerald” on the Yangtze River. It is located in the first continent where the Yangtze River enters Jiangsu. In August 2016, the Wetland Park was awarded the first national wetland park in Nanjing. It is also the first Yangtze River beach wetland park in my country. The number of bird species monitored by the survey team has increased year by year: 103 in 2016, and 215 in 2021. In five years, the number of bird species detected by researchers in the new Jeju Wetland Park has doubled. Plants such as loquats, mulberries, and blue sour jujubes are planted on the continent, and the ecological diversity has gradually recovered, and wild boars, deer, badgers and other beasts often appear.

According to Cao Peipei, an investigator from the investigation team and Nanjing Puhou Ecological Technology Co., Ltd., the latest data is the annual survey results from 2020 to 2021. The team first discovered 21 species of birds in the New Jeju Wetland Park last year, including cygnets, red-bellied ducks, and white-eyed pochards. The population of individual birds is also expanding. Last winter, more than 350 white spoonbills, a second-class national protected bird, and more than 30 oriental white storks, a national first-class protected bird, came here to spend the winter.

In January of this year, the investigation team discovered that nearly 10,000 national second-class protected species of duck-faced ducks live in the new Jeju Wetland Park. Many cryptoalgae grow in the waters near Zihuizhou, and they have high water quality requirements. Zihuizhou, Xinshengzhou, Zaishengzhou and Zimuzhou belong to wetland conservation areas, and the wild animals in the area are hardly disturbed by human beings and are in a state of “stocking”. Cao Peipei told reporters that the scope and functional areas of New Jeju have been adjusted this year. After the adjustment, the land area will increase by another 14.5 hectares, and the conservation area will account for 79.9% of the total area of New Jeju.

In 2022, the Xinjezhou Wetland has officially declared an “internationally important wetland”. Li Wenquan, director of the New Jeju Management Center Office, has been guarding the wetland for 14 years, witnessing the island’s transformation from a barren land to a paradise for wild animals. “In recent years, Xinjizhou Wetland Park has established an ecological monitoring system, established a scientific research monitoring laboratory, and set up 69 ecological monitoring points in the wetland park to carry out real-time dynamic monitoring of water quality, soil, and birds in the park.” Li Wenquan said, These data help them initially grasp the status quo and changing laws of the wetland park environment, and will continue to guide the site selection and program design of wetland protection and restoration projects.
