“Cuban Customs Regulations for Importing Goods”
Many Cubans living abroad often wonder about the regulations and taxes imposed by Cuban Customs on items brought into the country. Fortunately, we have official information from Cuban Customs that provides clarity on what can be brought in luggage, which items are exempt from taxes, and how tariffs are calculated and paid.
According to Cuban Customs, travelers can bring luggage within the weight and size limits set by the airline, as long as they do not exceed the maximum import value of $1000.00 or 125 kg. However, it is important to distinguish between personal effects, sundries, and appliances, as well as products that are exempt from taxes and have no limit.
For instance, personal effects such as laptops, cell phones, and tablets (up to 25 kg), sundries like clothes and shoes (up to 5 kg or $50.99), and medical supplies, medications, hygiene, and food do not incur taxes.
But what happens if the allowed limits are exceeded, or if appliances are brought into Cuba? How are taxes paid in such cases?
Cuban Customs charges taxes for items that exceed the allowed limits, including miscellaneous or household appliances. The total value of imported items must not exceed $1000.00, as per current regulations.
To determine the amount to be paid for appliances, individuals must consult the Customs Valuation List, which provides the prices in dollars for each item. For instance, a cell phone has a value of $80 (even though payment is made in Cuban pesos).
The currency used for paying Cuban Customs depends on whether the individual is a resident of Cuba or not, and whether it is their first import of the year.
Cuban residents making their first import of the year can pay in Cuban pesos. However, those who have imported before or are non-residents are charged in US dollars and must pay in Cuban pesos, with an exchange rate of 24 pesos to each dollar.
For miscellaneous items such as clothing and footwear, an additional $10.00 is charged for each extra kilogram. It is important to note that payment is made in Cuban pesos.
It is essential for travelers to be aware of these regulations and taxes when bringing items into Cuba to avoid any inconveniences or unexpected expenses. With official information from Cuban Customs, individuals can ensure a smooth and hassle-free importation process.
