Scientific and technological innovation is essential to respond to global challenges such as disease and poverty, but technological innovation alone is not enough. The international community also needs innovative partnerships, so that scientific and technological achievements can continue to meet the needs of people, and everyone can benefit from scientific and technological progress. For more than 20 years, the Gates Foundation has been establishing innovative partnerships so that everyone can obtain life-saving innovations as its primary goal. China has always been our important partner.

Since 2000, the Gates Foundation has participated in the creation of the Global Fund to accelerate the end of the AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria epidemics on a global scale, and has saved more than 40 million lives. We also helped create the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization to provide immunizations for the world’s poorest children. Today, more than 888 million children have received basic immunizations through the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization. China has gradually changed from receiving donations from the Global Fund and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization to self-financing, and now it has donated to these two institutions, which fully confirms the value of these two partnership models.

The Consultative Organization for International Agricultural Research is the world‘s largest agricultural research organization, providing innovative solutions to ensure food security in response to the challenges posed by climate change. The Gates Foundation is the main supporter of the organization. The organization has maintained in-depth cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences for a long time, and is committed to jointly improving food security and achieving sustainable agricultural growth. In 2017, the Gates Foundation and partners established the Epidemic Prevention Innovation Alliance with the goal of accelerating the development of vaccines against emerging infectious diseases and ensuring that every country can obtain and afford these vaccines when needed. Today, this work is particularly important. China is an active participant and an important contributor to the fight against the new crown pneumonia epidemic. The Epidemic Prevention Innovation Alliance has supported the research and development of multiple new crown vaccines from China.

The new crown pneumonia epidemic has strengthened our determination to develop innovative partnerships. The Gates Foundation, together with governments and international organizations, jointly launched the “Global Cooperation to Accelerate the Development, Production, and Fair Access to New Tools for the Prevention and Control of New Coronary Pneumonia” initiative to promote equitable access to resources to fight the new crown pneumonia epidemic. The “New Crown Vaccine Implementation Plan” is the vaccine pillar of the initiative, and more than 700 million doses of the new crown vaccine have been delivered to 144 countries and regions. The international community must work together to meet changing needs by establishing new partnerships and adjusting existing partnerships to ensure fair access to the new crown vaccine.

China is making more and more contributions to improving the health and well-being of people all over the world, and has increasingly become an important partner. The Gates Foundation cooperates with the Chinese government and institutions in many aspects. We have jointly established the Global Health Drug R&D Center with the Beijing Municipal Government and Tsinghua University to conduct drug R&D work for diseases that seriously affect developing countries such as tuberculosis and malaria. We work with Chinese vaccine manufacturers, government agencies, and multilateral organizations to ensure that vaccines reach those most in need. The Japanese encephalitis vaccine produced in China has protected more than 400 million children in 12 countries. China’s first domestic cervical cancer vaccine was pre-certified by the World Health Organization not long ago, which has the potential to help women in low- and middle-income countries avoid cervical cancer. During the 8th Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, China announced that it will provide Africa with another 1 billion doses of the new crown vaccine, of which 600 million doses will be free aid, and 400 million doses will be provided through joint production by Chinese companies and relevant African countries. . Previously, China pledged to work hard to provide 2 billion doses of vaccine throughout the year. On the basis of donating 100 million US dollars to the “New Crown Vaccine Implementation Plan”, China will donate another 100 million doses of vaccine to developing countries within the year to help reduce the distribution of new crown vaccines. Gap.

China’s increasingly prominent role in the global health industry has made me more convinced that cultivating a broad and diverse innovative partnership with consistent goals is the best way to deal with global challenges. Whether it is fighting the new crown pneumonia epidemic or protecting more children from preventable diseases, China has always been an important and reliable strategic partner. Hand in hand, we will achieve the common goal-let everyone have fair access to life-saving tools, and build a fairer and healthier world.
