Ralph Fiennes’ new film as director is called The Beacon. The actor transforms a screenplay into images that marks his debut in writing a film. The story takes place in the English countryside and the tension seems assured.
Ralph Fiennes he gets back behind the camera, and if you know a little about his life and career, you will certainly know that in his CV there are already three films, very different from each other and all quite interesting. In 2011 the actor made his debut with Coriolanusfrom a tragedy of William Shakespearewhile the period film was released in 2013 The Invisible Woman. Finally, in 2019, it arrived Nureyev – The White Crowbiopic about the dancer Rudolf Nureyev. The new feature film is titled The Beacon and, as you might imagine, it’s not a comedy.
The Beacon: what we know about Ralph Fiennes’ fourth film as director
The first and most important thing to say about The Beacon is that it still marks a debut, and always of Ralph Fiennes. The screenplay is the first that the actor writes, because in other cases the script was someone else’s work.
The Beacon it is described as “a fierce reflection on family, class, race and identity, as well as a contemporary drama taking place in Britain”. The director is also the protagonist and they act together with him Indira Varma (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Charles Babalola (Mary Magdalene) e Alison Oliver (Saltburn).
Here is the official synopsis as reported by the Collider website, source of our news:
Joshua Nyaga leaves London to go to the countryside to spend a summer weekend with his girlfriend Cass and her family for the first time. Torn, when he was just a boy, by the violence of the civil war in Uganda and catapulted into the asphalt jungle of London, Joshua has never had the privileges enjoyed by Cass’s family. Surrounded by the sea and magnificent natural landscapes, the country house is an oasis brimming with high ideals and lively conversations between Cass’ father and stepmother and their longtime friend Michael. Joshua is warmly welcomed, but a sudden act of violent racism at a local concert disrupts the overall peace, forcing Joshua and those around him to confront the uncomfortable truth about their differences.
Judging by the plot, The Beacon it feels tense and claustrophobic. Collider draws a comparison with Get Out – Scappa, but the film doesn’t necessarily have a horror component. Perhaps behind this hypothesis lies an image of Ralph Fiennes distorted by its well-known role as Lord Voldemort in the saga of Harry Potter.
Among the films we will see next Ralph Fiennes There are The Return – adaptation of The Odyssey directed by Uberto Pasolini and also played by Juliette Binoche – and the thriller set in the Vatican Conclave.
