During the visit of the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro Urrego to the municipality of Arauquita, he reported that he will invest 15,000 billion for the cocoa collection and fermentation plant. In addition, he proposed transforming the territory based on cocoa, the “Route of Sovereignty” and the University in Saravena.
At the time of his speech, Governor Renson Martínez Prada pointed out Arauca’s outstanding position as a producer of high-quality cocoa worldwide, highlighting that more than 6,500 families depend on this crop for their livelihood. He also stressed that Arauca is the second largest nationally with more than 20 thousand hectares dedicated to this sector and 36 agro-industrial enterprises related to cocoa in the region.
Martínez Prada, highlighted that the development of primary cocoa production in Arauca is the result of the effort and dedication of the Araucanian farmers, who not only ensure the quality of the product, but also contribute significantly to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country. .
Furthermore, he emphasized that one of the main challenges for Arauca is to take the first step towards agribusiness, without ignoring the importance of having adequate infrastructure, such as roads, that facilitate the transportation of products to the processing and marketing centers.
In this sense, he asked President Petro to invest in the “Ruta de la Soberanía” and the “Ruta de Los Libertadores”, which connect Arauca with the rest of the country. He thanked the Colombian president for announcing 45 billion pesos for the paving of the Arauquita road – the town of Aguachica, a dream that the Arauquitean population has been waiting for for more than 50 years, and will be achieved through an investment project. managed with the Territory Renewal Agency.
The Governor also highlighted the importance of access to knowledge for the sustainable development of the region, and referred to advances in higher education such as the appointment of 50 teachers for the face-to-face courses offered at the National University; the presence of the National Open and Distance University –UNAD- in Arauquita, which will benefit more than 1,500 young people; and the projection of the Rural University in the municipality of Tame and the construction of the headquarters of a public University in Saravena.
Martínez Prada took advantage of the space to make a call to protect the Denomination of Origin of Araucano Cocoa, a genetic heritage discovered in the region more than 370 years ago and exhibited to the President of the Republic the Arauquita 5, Saravena 13 and Tame fruits. 2, highlighting that, “with the union of these three fruits, we won at the Chocolate Show, which is why we are making a fair claim to the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce because Fedecacao wants to usurp the designation of origin, to benefit the big industries”.
