Smell of burning in Essen community center: cause still unclear

Essen-Holsterhausen. The next events in the Melanchthon community center in Essen-Holsterhausen have been canceled. That’s what the fire department says.

Due to the smell of fire, the events in the Melanchthon Community Center (Melanchthonstrasse 3/Holsterhauser Platz) next weekend, March 2nd and 3rd, have been canceled. According to the Essen Evangelical Church District, visitors to the Lenten service on Thursday evening, February 29th in the community center clearly noticed the smell of burning.

Because the cause has not yet been found, all events that were supposed to take place there at the weekend – including the service on Sunday at 11.15 a.m. – had to be canceled. The parish presbytery asks for your understanding of this security measure. “Anyone who would like to attend a church service is welcome at 10 a.m. in the Church of the Redeemer, Friedrichstrasse 17/corner of Bismarckstrasse,” said the Evangelical Church.

The Essen fire department did not find the cause of the smell of fire

When asked, fire department spokesman Christian Schmücker explained that the fire department was called to an operation at the community center on Thursday at 7:44 p.m. “The colleagues also noticed the smell of fire there,” he says. However, there was no smoke and the firefighters could not find the cause of the smell using measuring devices or thermal imaging cameras. They then walked through almost all areas without discovering anything unusual. There was only no key for the boiler room. “The caretaker now wants to have the heating system checked,” says Schmücker.
