With the year 2023 coming to an end, the time has also come to say goodbye to the Leonding funeral. This ceased operations on December 31st. According to Mayor Sabine Naderer-Jelinek (SP), this is not due to austerity measures; rather, the decision was made in view of impending retirements and the increasingly difficult search for staff.
However, the former funeral office space at Michaelsbergstrasse 16 is not deserted; on January 1st, Linz AG Funeral Services opened a new reception office there. Linz AG is not unfamiliar with the terrain; we hear from there that there have been collaborations with Leonding Funeral Service in the past. For example, Linz AG provided transportation for the city’s funeral services.
With the opening of the Leonding office, employees will now be able to provide support and advice to people on the spot in the event of bereavement. In total, Linz AG Funeral Services now operates ten reception offices, three of which are located outside of Linz. In addition to Leonding, there are also locations in Ansfelden and Gramastetten.
Base on the Hart Plateau?
Linz AG also sees potential beyond the Leonding center, specifically with a view to the Harter Plateau. Here, the Linz AG subsidiary Linz Service GmbH (this also includes funerals) is considering setting up a base for the “large catchment area there”. According to Linz AG, corresponding discussions with a housing company are already underway. In addition to funerals, Service GmbH’s areas of responsibility include water and wastewater.
