Bologna – In just three months of operation (its construction was completed at the end of last November) it allowed us to stop 90 cubic meters of wood transported by the river waters. It is the result of the first experimentation from the selective bridle on the river Saviomade in Cesenaabout 300 meters upstream from the Ca’ Bianchi area.
The work, financed by the Region with 95mila eurowas designed and managed by the technicians of the Forlì-Cesena Office of the Regional Agency for Civil Protection and Territorial Security.
“This is a particularly innovative dam, created with the aim of intercepting and blocking trunks and branches transported during floods, in order to guarantee the hydraulic efficiency of the watercourse – he comments Irene Priolo, vice president with responsibility for Civil Protection -. Already during the flood of last May the dam, still under construction, with only the central pylon contributed to blocking large quantities of materials: now, three months after the completion of the construction works, we have a first positive balance which confirms the opportunity and necessity of the intervention for the purposes of the hydraulic safety of the river channel”.
How it is made and how it works
About 4 and a half meters high and 30 meters wide, the bridle is made up of a central steel pylon, fixed on the river bed with six micropiles, and two beams positioned on the banks, anchored to the ground. It is also equipped with four very high-strength steel cables, with a breaking load of more than 40 tons. The lowest rope is positioned on the bottom, at a height between one and a half and one meter and eighty meters, the highest can exceed four metres. When the wood transported by the water ends up on the structure, it is intercepted by the pylon and the ropes arranged to reduce the impact. The blocked material is then removed with means equipped with grippers which access the bridle area from a paved track.
