Too expensive technology: many small TVs are closing in Sardinia

Today is the day of the switch-off: second generation digital goes into operation on the island

SASSARI. It’s the day of the switch-off. Today the island will be the first Italian region to initiate the transition to second generation digital television. The transition to the new technology, in fact, if on the one hand it ensures a clearer and more stable signal, on the other it has a much higher price. There is talk of 50 thousand euros plus VAT for regional broadcasters (the so-called first-level ones) with a “discount” for the smallest ones: city or provincial ones.

The problem is that in Sardinia this second level has been recognized only for the province of Nuoro. The broadcasters from Cagliari, Sassari, Oristano and Gallura all fall within the first band. And therefore they have no alternatives: those who want to continue broadcasting must put their hand in their wallet and pay for the new service. Many will probably end up broadcasting on the web, because the costs of accessing the new digital are unsustainable.
