80 years later, the city remembers the horror that saw over 20,000 Slovenian and Croatian civilians locked up here, over 200 of whom died of disease and starvation

TREVISO. On 2 July 1942 the Cadorin barracks in via Feltrina in Monigo di Treviso, just built to house the infantry, dramatically changed its intended use, writing one of the saddest pages in its history. Escorted by 85 Italian soldiers, 600 people came from their families and their homes in Novo Mesto in Slovenia.

From that 2 July the Cadorin barracks became an internment camp, where in just over a year about 20 thousand Slovenian and Croatian civilians, including old men, women and children, passed from being inmates. Many of them, over 200, died of disease and starvation.

The opening of the Italian concentration camps for Slavic civilians was decided by our Army during the occupation of Slovenia and Dalmatia. Other camps were opened both in Slovenia and in Croatia, but above all in Italy.

On Saturday 2 July, eighty years after those tragic events, a commemoration ceremony took place in front of the plaque affixed to the perimeter wall of the barracks, which also hosted the 6th Folgore artillery specialists group, the base of future “objective buyers “Of the para.

To organize the event the Istresco social promotion association of Treviso and the 33rd electronic warfare regiment (EW), which since 1991 occupies the spaces of the barracks, six buildings arranged in a horseshoe capable of hosting an entire operational department.
