Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of former US President Donald Trump, has been elected co-chair of the Republican Party. A majority of the Republican National Committee (RNC) voted in favor of her and Michael Whatley on Friday. The leader of the Republicans in the state of North Carolina takes over the RNC chairmanship. He is a confidante of Trump and supports the ex-president in his claims that victory in the 2020 presidential elections was stolen from him through large-scale fraud.

In her speech in Houston, Texas, Lara Trump stated that the key now is to win the upcoming presidential elections. “It’s about good versus evil,” she said. The 41-year-old was previously a political commentator for the right-wing TV channel Fox News.

Whatley said in his speech that the goal is to achieve Republican majorities in both houses of the US House of Representatives. In November, all seats in the House of Representatives and a third of the seats in the Senate will also be distributed. The Democrats currently have a small majority in the Senate. The Republicans have a narrow majority in the House of Representatives.

In late February, their RNC predecessors, Ronna McDaniel and Drew McKissick, announced they would step down. Trump had previously suggested Whatley and his daughter-in-law for the position. The party was expected to follow him. The RNC organizes, among other things, the Republican Party Convention, where delegates formally choose the Republican presidential candidate after the primaries.
