The first semi-final at the ATP Masters in Miami was a clear affair. The in-form Jannik Sinner didn’t give Daniil Medvedev (Russia) the slightest chance. The Italian eliminated the Miami defending champions on Friday (March 29, 2024) 6:1, 6:2.
Sinner won the first set after just 33 minutes when he converted his first set point to make it 6-1. Medvedev didn’t come into the game at all, playing his first game when the score was 0:5.
Sinner also dominated the second round with precise shots from the baseline. In his opponent’s first service game, the Italian got three break points and used the first to make it 1-0.
Sinner stays cool and error-free
Medvedev then tried to increase the pressure and played more offensively. But Sinner wasn’t impressed at all. He made the right decisions almost flawlessly, even under pressure, and clinched victory with his first match point after just 69 minutes.
“Daniil made more mistakes than usual and I took my chance,” said Sinner after his fifth success in a row against his Russian opponent. Medvedev certainly didn’t feel that great, “he made a lot of mistakes that he wouldn’t normally make, and I took advantage of the opportunities. I was expecting a really tough match.” If the Italian wins the title in Florida, he will move past the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz into second place in the world rankings.
In the second semi-final, Germany’s number one Alexander Zverev will face Grigor Dimitrov on Saturday night. The Bulgarian veteran had previously eliminated world number one Carlos Alcaraz (Spain) in two sets.
