A stroke of luck for SC Freiburg: Christian Streich Image: EPA
The German football clubs are not lacking money, but rather specialists and managers who know what to do with the money. Christian Streich has created something in Freiburg that can be exemplary.
When the German national soccer team played against France last Saturday, fans from Freiburg will probably have asked themselves why Christian Günter was missing. The answer: He is only good, not very good, in the crucial details.
But the fact that not only fans from Freiburg think that Günter, the left-back of the small Bundesliga club from Breisgau, could have safely been in the German starting line-up in Lyon says a lot about the player and his consistency, but it should also say a lot more say about the coach – about Christian Streich, who makes his players bigger than they actually are, season after season.
