“FIFA 23” will be the last FIFA series game produced by EA, after which the series will be named “EA Sports FC”.
Cam Weber, general manager of EA Sports, said that FC will inherit all the elements that players love, game experience, modes, leagues, championships, clubs and players, while having all the content of UT, career mode, professional clubs, and street football.
EA’s idea is to put aside FIFA and directly connect with clubs, teams, players, as well as stadiums and events. Weber boasts that EA Sports has licensed 19,000 players and more than 700 teams, has access to more than 100 stadiums and more than 30 leagues, and has established exclusive partnerships with event organizers such as the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, and Serie A.
Weber believes that the FC platform will bring changes to the football game, and the company will announce the details of the new FC game next summer.
EA has previously complained that FIFA does nothing but tie the hands and feet of the development team, and company CEO Andrew Wilson hinted at an internal briefing that EA has no plans to renew the contract with FIFA, which is just “a name on the game box.”
Some media reported that FIFA asked to double the licensing fee for the next ten years to $2.5 billion, which caused strong dissatisfaction with EA. The ten-year license that the company is using will expire after the end of this year’s World Cup in Qatar. FIFA 23 is expected to include FIFA’s World Cup and the last EA Sports game to bear the FIFA title.
FIFA commented that it is currently negotiating with game publishers and investors about competing games to challenge EA’s FC football game. The initial idea is to pursue a realistic football game and schedule it to be released in 2024.
